Advising and Counseling

Advising and Counseling offices provide three primary services: success coaching, academic advising, and personal counseling.

Success Coaches are available to provide students with support in completing the application and registration process and the transition into college. Success Coaches connect students to campus resources and assist them throughout their first year by offering services designed to increase student success.

Academic advisors support students in developing plans to achieve their personal, academic and career goals. They assist students in exploring academic and career interests, monitor their academic success and track progress toward completing their educational requirements. Academic advisors help students identify and enroll in appropriate courses and make referrals to College resources and opportunities to help them achieve their goals.

Through TCC’s advising program, counselors, academic advisors, and faculty advisors assist students with identifying their program of study. To comply with regulations of the Texas Success Initiative (TSI), all First Time in College (FTIC) students must engage in placement testing and academic advising processes. In addition to the Advising and Counseling Centers located on each campus, TCC students have access to online academic advising. Online academic advisors provide support via chat and email.

All TCC students are expected to have at least one academic advising appointment each term to discuss their success and progress, ensure that they on track to meeting their educational goals, and to connect them to college resources and services. An advising visit is a one-on-one meeting with an academic advisor or counselor by phone, face-to-face, or online after the start of classes of the initial term for which a student registers. These advising sessions are designed to assist students with academic and career planning

Counselors specialize in providing confidential assistance for students experiencing personal concerns such as anxiety, depression, or other issues. They can also help students investigate strategies to achieve academic success through developing effective study habits, enhancing communication skills, minimizing test anxiety, improving time management, and exploring opportunities for the further development of critical and independent thinking.

For more information, refer to the TCC website and/or contact the campus Advising and Counseling office.
