Course goals and learning outcomes support the Foundational Component Areas
defined by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Course goals are linked to
the respective Core Curriculum Competencies: Critical Thinking Skills,
Communication Skills, Teamwork, and Personal Responsibility. Specific
competencies are identified in designated course goals and learning outcomes.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

Critical Thinking: Apply the principles of human communication including
perception, verbal communication, nonverbal communication, listening, and
audience analysis by
1. recognizing communication as a transactional process;
2. analyzing the role of perception as it relates to a person’s frame of
  reference;
3. demonstrating awareness of select appropriate verbal and nonverbal
  behaviors;
4. using listening skills that achieve accuracy in communication interactions.
Communication Skills: Demonstrate how to establish and maintain
relationships through the use of interpersonal communication by
1. identifying the role of communication in the development, maintenance,
  and termination of interpersonal relationships;
2. differentiating between appropriate and inappropriate self-disclosure;
3. recognizing the effectiveness of various communication behaviors in
  interpersonal conflict;
4. constructing examples of ways to improve interpersonal communication;
5. demonstrating awareness of the importance of ethics and communication.
Teamwork: Apply small group communication skills including problem solving,
group roles, leadership styles, and cohesiveness.
Empirical/Quantitative Skills: Demonstrate essential empirical and quantitative
skills by
1. evaluating and analyzing appropriate supporting materials from written
  and electronic sources;
2. evaluating sources to verify credibility;
3. analyzing statistical data for appropriate inclusion and usage in
  presentations.
Develop, research, organize, and deliver formal public speeches by
1. identifying a variety of confidence-building techniques;
2. identifying the major patterns of speech organization;
3. demonstrating key factors in audience analysis;
4. selecting appropriate topics;
5. locating appropriate supporting materials from written and electronic
  sources;
6. planning effective introductions, conclusions, and transitions;
7. constructing a well-organized outline;
8. explaining key principles of persuasion;
9. using appropriate visuals effectively, including the use of presentation
  software;
10. displaying effective delivery techniques;
11. demonstrating ethical public speaking behavior;
12. presenting at least one original informative speech and at least one
  original persuasive speech.
Social Responsibility: Demonstrate effective cross cultural communication and
social responsibility by
1. recognizing how to communicate within diverse environments;
2. identifying and analyzing factors involved in interacting successfully with
  people whose cultural perspectives differ from one’s own;
3. analyzing the effects of differing perspectives on the verbal and nonverbal
  communication behaviors of people from varying cultural groups;
4. demonstrating understanding of the value of global citizenship in the 21st
  century.
Personal Responsibility: Demonstrate personal responsibility by
1. demonstrating understanding of the ramifications and significance of
  appropriate verbal and nonverbal communication;
2. demonstrating effective listening skills when evaluating and analyzing
  information;
3. using ethical choices when selecting a topic, designing a presentation,
  and presenting the presentation;
4. applying elements of audience analysis.
Computer Literacy: Demonstrate computer literacy by
1. using the internet to develop speech research and submit assignments;
2. utilizing electronic programs to develop presentations.
