Course goals and learning outcomes support the Foundational Component Areas defined by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Course goals are linked to the respective Core Curriculum Competencies: Critical Thinking Skills, Communication Skills, Teamwork, and Personal Responsibility. Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

Critical Thinking Skills: Demonstrate communication competence and critical thinking through an understanding of the foundational communication models by
1. recognizing communication as a transactional process involving effective and ethical behaviors in business and professional settings;
2. explaining the importance of effective communication in business and professional settings;
3. identifying the appropriate channel of communication for a message.
Communication Skills: Demonstrate essential public speaking skills in professional presentations by
1. demonstrating the ability to manage communication anxiety;
2. demonstrating key factors in audience analysis;
3. selecting appropriate topics;
4. utilizing various technologies as they relate to competent communication;
5. planning effective introductions, conclusions, and transitions;
6. constructing a well-organized outline;
7. using appropriate visuals effectively, including the use of presentation software;
8. displaying effective delivery techniques;
9. demonstrating ethical public speaking behavior;
10. presenting at least one original informative speech and at least one original persuasive speech.
Empirical/Quantitative Skills: Demonstrate essential empirical and quantitative skills by
1. evaluating and analyzing appropriate supporting materials from written and electronic sources;
2. evaluating sources to verify credibility;
3. analyzing statistical data for appropriate inclusion and usage in business presentations.
Written/Oral Competency: Demonstrate written and oral competency as it relates to employment (including job searches, interviews, interpersonal interaction, conflict management, leadership, and performance appraisals) by
1. selecting characteristics of effective resumes and letters of application; identifying the responsibilities of the interviewer and interviewee;
2. demonstrating effective interview skills;
3. identifying the elements of listening in business and professional settings.
Teamwork: Apply essential dyadic and team processes as they relate to the workplace by describing characteristics of an effective small group;
1. explaining the role of leadership in successful groups;
2. identifying various communication behaviors for resolving group conflict;
3. using basic problem solving procedures;
4. demonstrating effective teamwork skills by considering various points of view and participating in a small project with a shared purpose.
Social Responsibility: Demonstrate effective cross-cultural communication and social responsibility by
1. identifying and analyzing the factors involved in how perspectives differ among people from varying cultural groups;
2. analyzing the complex nature of organizations and organizational culture;
3. identifying examples of how nonverbal communication differs among cultures locally, and globally;
4. understanding the value of global citizenship in the 21st Century.
Personal Responsibility: Demonstrate personal responsibility by
1. understanding the importance and consequences of both verbal and nonverbal communication in personal and business contexts;
2. recognizing the importance of listening in interactions and the role it plays in ethical decision making in both personal and business interactions;
3. analyzing and discussing ethical business situations to determine alternate options and consequences.
Computer Literacy: Demonstrate computer literacy by
1. using the internet to develop speech research and submit assignments;
2. using electronic programs to develop business presentations;
3. using electronic programs, including Blackboard and/or Google, to work on team projects;
4. participating in optical library classroom opportunities designed for effective speech research and source documentation.
