Create an argument through the use of historical evidence by using appropriate reading, listening, writing, and critical analysis skills by
1. comprehending text materials and other documents;
2. demonstrating an understanding of lectures, presentations, and film;

Analyze and interpret primary and secondary sources by
1. comprehending primary and secondary sources as part of a larger understanding of the discipline of history and how historians work;
2. demonstrating an understanding of various interpretations of specified historical events.
Analyze the effects of historical, social, political, economic, cultural, and global forces on this period of Texas history by
1. identifying the political, social, cultural, and economic conditions of the colonizing Spanish and French nation states that eventually led to Texas exploration and the creation of its boundaries;
2. describing the motivations behind Texas independence and the subsequent problems in forming and administering an independent Republic;
3. demonstrating a knowledge of the factors working for and against the annexation of Texas by the United States;
4. explaining the motivating factors behind Texas joining the Confederacy during the Civil War, explaining the extent of Texas’ involvement in the war, and describing the results for Texas;
5. identifying the political, economic, and social consequences of the Reconstruction era on the state;
6. describing the settlement and expansion of the Texas frontier and the concomitant development of cattle ranching, railroads, and the oil industry in the state;
