Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

Describe the stages of the developing person at different periods of the lifespan from birth to death by
1. discussing the social, political, economic, and cultural forces that affect the development process of the individual;
2. identifying factors of responsible personal behavior with regard to issues such as sexual activity, substance abuse, marriage, and parenting;
3. explaining the biosocial, cognitive, and psychological influences throughout the lifespan as an ongoing set of processes, involving both continuity and change;
4. describing the different developmental perspectives of the major theories of development (i.e. cognitive, learning, humanistic and psychodynamic);
5. identifying examples of some of the cultural and ethnic differences that influence development throughout the lifespan;
6. discussing the various causes or reasons for disturbances in the developmental process.
Demonstrate an understanding of human conception and periods of prenatal, infant, and toddler development by
1. describing the stages of the developing person at different periods of the lifespan from conception through early childhood;
2. demonstrating an awareness of the complex nature of development and variety of information sources;
3. reviewing scientific experimental procedures and methods;
4. outlining lifespan data collecting methods and research designs;
5. explaining ethical issues involved when research subjects are human and children;
6. identifying conception and prenatal terms, periods, treatments, and problems;
7. enumerating reasons for prenatal care;
8. describing childbirth approaches and the process of delivery;
9. identifying delivery problems;
10. identifying different neonate physical characteristics, norms, functions, and social behaviors;
11. describing neonate evaluation tests, reflexes, perception, and emotional states;
12. contrasting past and present societal attitudes towards children.

5. identifying the structure and universal order in which language develops;

8. explaining how maturation affects achievement;
9. outlining the major developmental tasks of childhood;
10. summarizing basic ideas related to nutrition, childcare, health/wellness, discipline, abuse, education, play, and fitness;
11. identifying specified childhood growth and development terms;
12. contrasting childhood life span theories.
Demonstrate an understanding of human development during adolescence by
1. outlining the stages of adolescent development;
2. describing adolescent growth and sexual developmental patterns for males and females;
3. outlining the major adolescent developmental tasks;
4. describing adolescent cognitive development;
5. summarizing basic ideas related to school, dating, sex education, self-image, nutrition, diseases, discipline, drug abuse, delinquency, and (running away) family;
6. describing adolescent social development;
7. contrasting adolescent life span theories;
8. identifying stress factors and adolescent concerns;
9. describing adolescent emotional development;
10. identifying specified adolescent growth and development terms.
Demonstrate an understanding of human development during young, middle, and late adulthood by
1. outlining the stages of adult development;
2. correlating adult developmental tasks with adult stages of development;
3. identifying specified adulthood development terms;
4. enumerating adulthood theories of development;
5. describing adulthood physical changes, fitness, nutrition, and health concerns;
6. identifying basic ideas related to the cognitive aspects of adult development;
7. describing various adult lifestyles and implications;
8. enumerating adulthood stress factors, special issues, and possible problems;
9. describing adulthood transitions;
10. summarizing theories of, preparation for, and concerns related to death and dying;
