Articulate the relationship between dances and the historical and cultural contexts from which they emerged.
Express an informed personal reaction to dance forms.
Critically analyze and write about dance using established methods of dance criticism.
Evaluate the impact of dance on culture.
Identify primitive dance forms by
1. describing the three types of circle formations;
2. identifying the processional;
3. describing the chain formation;
4. explaining the primary purposes of primitive dance.
Analyze attitudes toward dance found in early societies by
1. explaining the importance of dance in early Greece;
2. summarizing the different types of dance that occurred in Biblical times;
3. differentiating between religious dance and “non-religious” dance in the Medieval period.
Summarize the significant historical developments in ballet by
1. tracing the early development of ballet in the royal courts;
2. identifying early influential pioneers in classical ballet;
3. differentiating between the four schools of ballet;
4. tracing the evolution of ballet from the Pre-Romantic to the Romantic eras;
5. contrasting developments in contemporary classical ballet with early ballet.
Identify basic ballet movements found in contemporary ballet classrooms by
1. explaining the purpose of the warm up in dance;
2. explaining basic barre exercises;
3. describing basic center floor exercises;
4. defining the terms adagio, petit allegro, and grande allegro.
Summarize the significant historical developments in modern dance by
1. tracing the early development of modern dance;
2. identifying early influential pioneers in modern dance;
3. contrasting developments in contemporary modern dance with early modern dance trends.
Analyze the development of tap dance by
1. summarizing the historical influences found in tap dance;
2. describing the basic tap styles;
3. identifying influential artists in tap;
4. describing the basic tap steps which are indicative of the basic tap styles.
Analyze the development of jazz dance by
1. summarizing the historical influences found in jazz dance;
2. describing basic jazz styles;
3. identifying the influential artists in jazz;
4. describing basic jazz movements, including isolations;
5. explaining the influence of jazz on the musical theatre scene.
Summarize the various areas of dance production by
1. identifying basic terminology associated with dance production;
2. summarizing the jobs associated with different technicians and creative artists in dance production;
3. differentiating between the components involved in the creation of a formal dance concert;
4. explaining lighting, sound, and costume design for dance within a live production.
Critique a dance concert in written/verbal form by
Communication Skills: Demonstrate an understanding of selected dance forms, terminology, and development of effective written, oral, visual, and physical communication focused on the historical and cultural context by
1. identifying dance formations and their significance to dance as community;
2. identifying dance genres and their significance to dance as art;
3. analyzing and discussing periods of dance, dance genres, dance techniques, and dance as it relates to historical/cultural contexts;
4. assessing skills through written essays, oral presentations, and movement exercises
Critical Thinking Skills: Demonstrate the ability to research, analyze, and evaluate dance as art, entertainment, communication, various dance styles, and the historical and cultural context within which dance is made by
1. identifying selected time periods of dance, dance artists, and styles;
2. analyzing the development of dance in social, community, performative, creative, and production aspects in dance technology;
3. explaining the influence of culture in selected time periods, places, and social, economic, and political context;
4. assessing through written essays, exams, oral presentations, and movement exercises.
Social Responsibility: Demonstrate the ability to discuss dance in historical context by intercultural competency, civic knowledge, and the ability to engage effectively in regional, national, and global communities by
