Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

Demonstrate knowledge of measurement units and use measurements in problem solving by
1. identifying appropriate metric unit for a type of measurement;
2. converting measurements from one unit to another;
3. using scientific notation and significant figures correctly;
4. solving chemical calculations using dimensional analysis.
Comprehend basic knowledge of properties and changes of matter and energy by
1. describing states of matter;
2. identifying types of matter, types of energy, changes in matter, and changes in energy;
3. matching names of elements to symbols and location of element on periodic table;
4. predicting trends in chemical and physical properties using the periodic table;
5. predicting the subatomic composition of atoms and isotopes;
6. distinguishing between types of nuclear radiation;
7. explaining changes that take place in the atomic structure of radioactive isotopes.
Demonstrate knowledge of covalent and ionic compounds and their nomenclature by
1. identifying types of bonding and intermolecular attractive forces;
2. explaining ion formation, ionic bond formation, and covalent bond formation;
3. predicting chemical formulas and names for inorganic compounds using standard IUPAC nomenclature;
4. producing Lewis structures for covalent molecules and polyatomic ions and predict their three dimensional structure using VSEPR Theory.
Illustrate knowledge of chemical changes and chemical quantities by
1. identifying chemical reaction types using standard classification methods;
2. applying the law of conservation of mass to balance chemical equations;
3. relating the mole concept to mass, number of particles, and volume;
4. relating quantities of reactants and products in a chemical reaction using reaction stoichiometry.
Demonstrate knowledge of gas laws to predict the behavior of gases by
1. describing the kinetic theory of gases;
2. stating gas laws;
3. using the gas laws to predict changes in volume, temperature, or pressure.
Demonstrate knowledge of solution properties by
1. distinguishing solutes and solvents in a solution;
2. identifying acids, bases, and acid/base conjugate pairs;
3. describing acid and base characteristics and the pH scale;
4. distinguishing saturated and unsaturated solutions; electrolytes and nonelectrolytes; acidic, basic, or neutral solutions;
5. explaining the role of buffers in maintaining pH;
6. solving for solution concentrations;
7. using molarity and percent concentration in calculations involving dilution or preparation of solutions.
Integrate classroom knowledge of general inorganic chemistry with hands-on learning in the laboratory by
1. performing basic chemistry laboratory procedures;
2. describing observations made during experiments;
3. applying laboratory safety rules to complete assigned lab activities safely;
4. using data collected and basic knowledge of general inorganic chemistry to reach a conclusion.
Communication Skills: Students will effectively develop ideas, interpret data, and express results of scientific investigation through written, oral, or visual communication by

2. recording experimental work completely and accurately on laboratory experiment data pages.
Critical Thinking Skills: Students will use critical thinking, inquiry, analysis, and evaluation to reach informed conclusions, predict results, and identify or classify matter, reactions, and compounds by
1. identifying trends in chemical and physical properties of the elements using the periodic table;
2. applying IUPAC rules of nomenclature to name chemical compounds and write chemical formulas;

Empirical and Quantitative Skills: Students will use empirical and quantitative skills to manipulate and analyze numerical data and observable facts to reach informed conclusions by
1. performing chemical experiments utilizing scientific tools such as glassware and basic apparatus to make measurements, make observations, and analyze collected data;
2. converting units of measure and demonstrating dimensional analysis skills;
3. solving stoichiometric problems;
4. calculating chemical quantities.
Teamwork: Students will work effectively with others in a small group setting to safely complete a laboratory experiment by actively participating in performing the experiment and discussing experimental results to draw conclusions.
Computer Literacy: Students will demonstrate knowledge and proficiency in the use of personal computers for data entry and the internet by
1. creating an online account in electronic homework management system;
2. performing/completing electronic web-based homework.
