Petition Criteria:

  • The following courses DITA 1301, FDNS 1309, FDNS 1346, and FDNS 1447 must be completed within the last 3 years with a "B" or better to petition for Practicum Courses FDNS 1168, FDNS 2168, and FDNS 2169. See course prerequisites for specific requirements.

Students may petition for a practicum during the semester in which they meet the requirements. However, students will not be enrolled in the practicum until the course grade is published on the student's transcript.

Practicum Petition Approval Criteria:

Program Coordinators review the petitions and approve students based on prerequisite grade requirements and the submission of required background checks, drug screens, health documents, and other required forms. There is no minimum GPA requirement.

Program Completion Requirements:

  • DITA 1301, FDNS 1309, FDNS 1346, and FDNS 1447 with a "B" or better, and all other DITA, FDNS, HECO, and IFWA courses with a "C" or better to graduate from the Nutrition and Dietetics Program.

  • FDNS 1346 and FDNS 1447 must be completed within five years from graduation.

  • All students must complete a minimum of 450 supervised practice hours (over three practicum courses) and receive a satisfactory practicum evaluation to complete the DT program.

  • Students not enrolled in dietetics courses for two consecutive semesters will be removed from the program.

  • Students who meet all program completion requirements will be eligible to sit for the national NDTR (Nutrition Dietetic Technician, Registered) credentialing examination.

Additional Requirements:

Students petitioning to a practicum must undergo and receive a clear criminal background check and negative substance abuse screening. In addition, students are required to meet physical requirements and Nutrition and Dietetics Program immunization requirements and provide proof of CPR for healthcare provider, ServSafe Manager Certification, and a valid Texas driver's license prior to starting practicum rotation.

Licensing Notice: (HB 1508)
