Advising and Counseling Centers
Advising & Counseling offices provide three primary services: success coaching, academic advising, and counseling.
Success Coaches are available to provide students with support in completing the registration process and transition into college. Success Coaches connect students to campus resources and assist them throughout their first year by offering workshops designed to increase student success.
Academic advisors support students in developing plans to achieve their personal, academic and career goals. They assist students in exploring academic and career interests, monitor their academic success and track progress toward completing their educational requirements. Academic advisors help students identify and enroll in appropriate courses and make referrals to College resources and opportunities to help them achieve their goals.
As one portion of TCC’s advisement program, counselors, academic advisors, and faculty advisors assist students with their program of study. To comply with regulations of the Texas Success Initiative, all First Time in College (FTIC) students must participate in the testing and advisement process. In addition to the Advising and Counseling Centers located on each campus, TCC students also have access to online academic advising. Online academic advising provides support via chat and email.
Counselors specialize in providing confidential assistance for students experiencing personal concerns such as anxiety, depression, or other issues. They can also help students investigate strategies to achieve academic success through developing effective study habits, enhancing communication skills, minimizing test anxiety, improving time management, and exploring opportunities for the further development of critical and independent thinking.
Refer to the TCC website to contact the Advising and Counseling offices.
New Student Group Advisement (NSGA)
NSGA is a group advising session that provides information for FTIC students regarding:
- TCC policies and requirements
- WebAdvisor & MyTCC
- Sign up for New Student Orientation
- Degree and certificate offerings
- Building the best schedule
- Free student resources
NOTE: Students cannot take the TSI assessment test (if required) or enroll at TCC until this requirement is fulfilled.
In an effort to partner in success, FTIC students are required to complete two advising visits per semester until they reach 30 credit hours. An advising visit is a one-on-one meeting with a counselor or advisor either by phone, face-to-face (preferred), or online after the start of classes of the initial term for which a student registers. These advising sessions are designed to assist students with academic and career planning. Additionally, as part of TCC’s ongoing efforts for student success, an Advising Case Management plan has been created. This practice assists students in remaining in contact with Advising, connects them with other offices, and supports them through their time at TCC.
